These tags are your search result
The title tag is the blue clickable line. The meta description is the grey text under it. Together they are the entire advertisement you get, and most sites never write them on purpose.
What a missing title costs
Google falls back to whatever it can scrape, often the domain name or a navigation label. Your result becomes the least clickable one on the page, no matter how well you rank.
The description does not rank you
It is not a ranking factor and has not been for years. It decides whether the person clicks, which is a different and equally useful job. Google also rewrites it often, and writing a good one makes that less likely.
Common questions
How long should a title tag be?
Around 50 to 60 characters is what usually fits before Google truncates it. There is no hard limit, the cutoff is measured in pixels.
Can I have more than one H1?
HTML5 permits it and Google has said it does not cause problems. One H1 that states what the page is about is still the clearer choice.
Why does Google show different text than my description?
Google rewrites descriptions when it thinks another passage matches the query better. A specific, accurate description gets rewritten less often.
